On Monday, nearly 1,200 new COVID-19 cases and two confirmed deaths caused by the disease were reported in New Jersey. While scientists are also turning their attention to the lucky — and rare — individuals who have managed to dodge the coronavirus for more than two years now, others have been reinfected multiple times. Do researchers yet know why that is?
“There are people, like myself, who have never been infected by the virus even though my wife has, my kids have, etcetera. Either I’ve been lucky — I’ve just avoided getting infected or I had an asymptomatic infection because I had pretty good immunity from vaccine. For most people we don’t know the difference, so it could be one or the other,” said Dr. Martin Blaser, director of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine at Rutgers University.
